A few weeks back, I shared the importance of teens moving their bodies. They are supposed to be getting:
12k steps daily
… be physically active. Not just on tech and inside all day.
I get 10k steps daily and most days by 10am. Ending a good chunk of days at about 20k steps.
I’m not going it alone.
I’m invested in my children.
This June, I purchased my sons, King Caleb (12) and King Elijah (9), smart watches to track their steps. I spent about $50 total.
They really like the watches – which is important for more immediate buy in.
They are required to get 10k steps before any type of “free play” tech. They both have to hit the goal for tech to be unlocked. This teaches that individual success although great is not better than making sure those on the team are accelerating too.
The other day King Elijah was ahead of King Caleb (or vice versa…don’t remember) – they had to both hit the mark.
In just a couple days of doing this I see them working together to hit their individual step goal and in making sure they both make it.
They have gone outside and walked together. I hear them asking each other “How many steps you got?”.
This pleases me.
I mean they are up in the morning and moving. ![]()

They also can’t come to me with ” I wasn’t wearing my watch….so didn’t track my steps”.
Steps must be tracked on the watch. Teaching them to be responsible – keep that watch charged and wear it when tracking to 10k steps (minimally).
Lose the watch. Lose the tech (individually)or get it back by paying me double what I paid.
Don’t have money? Hustle. Start a business. ![]()

The boys appreciate getting the 10k alert from their watches!

Now my daughter, Queen Glory (4), wants a “fancy watch”, her words.
The boys did ask if they could break on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday.
Thought about it for a min.
No. They cannot.
They are aware.
They don’t ask for a break from hours on VR or tablets on the weekends.
10k steps is really not much at all. Plus, when I’m doing it myself and much more – they can’t say I’m not walking it like I talk it.
Well…they could make case for me being on my phone…scrolling…before I hit my 10k. I’ll work on that.
Get your kids out and moving daily. Do the same for yourself.
My boys appreciate getting momentum and one of them told me it is helping them!
Even if your kids initially whine about this journey being kicked off – push through. Growth is often resisted, but the transformative results end up being welcomed!
